How to get ready for online events

Since COVID-19 outbreak, our lives have changed dramatically. It’s been difficult to organize gatherings, go to classes in person, participate in different activities and events. Remote working and studying have become a new norm, and they are here to stay.

It became harder than ever to network or go for a coffee with your mentors to talk about your careers, or to get a sense of direction. You are not alone in this. Most of your schools are working extremely hard to provide a seamless higher education experience for you. We are now in the era of virtual recruiting and networking. That means, we need to be better aware of how it works and how to stand out amongst other candidates. Let’s imagine that you are attending a virtual career fair or a virtual networking event hosted by your university. How can you get ready? These might seem a bit too obvious and silly for you, but they actually will determine your first impression on the screen. As you can imagine, it is extremely important to score high with your first impression, especially during your online interviews. Let’s look into how you can tick off all the boxes and get hired!

  1. Do your research:

Same for your in-person interview, it is obvious for the recruiters if you haven’t done your research. They meet hundreds of other candidates every day, be ready to ask, and get asked questions.

2. Test your stable internet

This is one of many things that you never had to check for in-person interviews. Make sure that your internet is stable and it won’t get cut off during the meeting. It’s most likely that recruiters have back to back meetings, so they won’t be able to wait for you.

3. Use earphones

In continuation of number 2, make sure that you are in a quiet place, where background noise won’t interrupt your meeting with the recruiters. You should check your camera and microphone before joining the meeting. Use earphones, so that you can hear the recruiter well and vice versa.

4. Check your background

It doesn’t always have to be a plain white background. However, make sure that it’s not your dirty laundry laying around. Remember, what you show them on the screen is all they have to judge you other than your resumes.

5. Don’t mumble

Articulate. If you think that you are exaggerating, that’s probably the right amount. It’s harder to read your body language and to deliver what you mean to say via online interviews. Make everything clear, and simple for your recruiters.

6. Have questions ready

The easiest way to stand out and to be remembered by recruiters is to ask them questions. One mistake everyone makes is that they concentrate so much on giving the right answers, they miss out on the opportunity to make a difference in their interviews. If you did your research as suggested in number 1, it shouldn’t be too hard for you to come up with one or two interesting questions to make!

You know the drill. Apply to tens and hundreds of job positions, and you will get rejected multiple times. But remember, all you need is one YES from a recruiter who sees your potential! Good luck and let’s get you hired!
